Privacy Policy

ThemePreview for Shopify

Effective Date: June 9, 2026

Overview

ThemePreview for Shopify (“the Extension”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and how we protect it.

TLDR: We don’t collect or send any data. Everything stays on your device.

1. Data Collection

ThemePreview for Shopify does NOT collect, transmit, store on servers, or share any personal data.

The extension only:

  • Reads the URL of the website page you’re currently viewing (to build preview links)
  • Saves theme IDs you manually enter to your local browser storage
  • Provides clipboard access when you click “Copy Link”

2. Local Storage

The Extension saves the last 5 theme IDs you’ve used to your browser’s local storage using `chrome.storage.local`. This data:

  • ✅ Stays entirely on your device
  • ✅ Is never sent to any server
  • ✅ Is never shared with third parties
  • ✅ Is deleted if you uninstall the extension
  • ✅ Can be manually cleared via Chrome settings at any time

3. Permissions Explanation

The Extension requests the following permissions. Here’s exactly why each one is needed:

activeTab

Purpose: Access the active tab when you click the extension icon
How it’s used: Lets us read the current page URL to build the preview link
Data shared: Not sent anywhere — used only locally

tabs

Purpose: Read the URL of any tab to update the toolbar icon
How it’s used: The icon changes color (blue / dark / grey) based on whether the current tab is a Shopify store. This requires reading the tab URL in the background
Data shared: Not sent anywhere — checked locally only

scripting

Purpose: Inject a detection script into the current page
How it’s used: Reads JavaScript globals (e.g. window.Shopify.theme) and DOM elements to detect the active Shopify theme ID — without this, theme detection is impossible
Data shared: Not sent anywhere — all processing happens in your browser

storage

Purpose: Save minor UI preferences locally
How it’s used: Stores lightweight settings on your device only
Data shared: Not sent anywhere — stored only in your browser

clipboardWrite

Purpose: Copy preview links to your clipboard
How it’s used: When you click “Copy Link,” the generated preview URL is written to your clipboard
Data shared: Only copied to your local clipboard; not sent to any server

Host Permissions (all URLs)

Purpose: Allow the extension to work on any website
How it’s used: Shopify stores run on any domain — custom storefronts, branded domains, and myshopify.com subdomains. The extension must be able to detect Shopify on all of them
Data shared: No data is collected or transmitted from any page visited

4. What We Don’t Do

  • ❌ We don’t collect analytics or track usage
  • ❌ We don’t send data to external servers
  • ❌ We don’t share data with third parties
  • ❌ We don’t sell or use your data for advertising
  • ❌ We don’t store your browsing history
  • ❌ We don’t have accounts or login systems

5. Security

All data is stored locally on your device using Chrome’s built-in storage APIs. Your data is as secure as your device and browser.

6. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy occasionally. Any changes will be reflected with an updated “Effective Date” at the top of this page. Continued use of the Extension means you accept the updated policy.

7. Your Rights

Since we don’t collect any data, there’s nothing to request, delete, or transfer. You have complete control over all stored data:

  • ✅ Clear stored theme IDs: Uninstall the extension
  • ✅ Delete extension data: Chrome will auto-delete it
  • ✅ Review stored data: Chrome’s Developer Tools > Application > Storage > Local Storage

8. Third-Party Services

ThemePreview for Shopify does not use any third-party services, analytics tools, or CDNs. The extension is entirely self-contained.
